Johnson Asiedu Nketia declared his unwavering allegiance to the philosophies of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, at NkrumahFest 2026 held in Nkroful. As the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nketia attributed his ascent in politics to Nkrumah’s free education policy, which he believes fundamentally altered the course of his life. Nketia recalled his childhood in Seikwa, where he was rescued from the streets by members of the Young Pioneers. At that time, many children were denied the right to education, but the introduction of free compulsory universal basic education forced his family to send him to school. “I am here today as the National Chairman of the NDC because of the very important policy by Dr Kwame Nkrumah,” he stated, emphasizing the policy’s direct impact on his educational journey. During the event, which commemorated the 117th birthday of Dr Nkrumah, Nketia expressed his belief that Nkrumah’s policies have left an indelible mark on the nation. The festival served as a platform for Ghanaians to reflect on Nkrumah’s contributions and the importance of preserving his legacy. “NkrumahFest provided an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the former president’s contribution and the need to preserve his legacy,” Nketia said. The celebration in Nkroful attracted a diverse crowd, highlighting the ongoing relevance of Nkrumah’s vision for Ghana. Nketia’s remarks resonated with many attendees, who echoed his sentiments about the transformative effects of Nkrumah’s leadership. The free education policy, implemented in the early years of Ghana’s independence, aimed to provide equal educational opportunities to all children, regardless of their background. This was a radical departure from the previous system, which favored the privileged. Nketia’s personal story illustrated the broader significance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. His family initially intended for him to remain at home, managing their cocoa farm and adhering to royal family responsibilities. However, the introduction of this policy shifted their obligations. The urgency of the law meant that his relatives faced prosecution if they did not comply. In his speech, Nketia emphasized that his commitment to Nkrumah’s ideals extends beyond personal gratitude. He aims to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of Nkrumah’s teachings and to inspire future generations. The NDC has consistently cited Nkrumah as a foundational figure in its political ideology, further cementing his legacy in Ghana’s political landscape. The NkrumahFest not only celebrated Nkrumah’s birth but also served as a reminder of the ongoing relevance of his ideals in contemporary Ghana. Attendees engaged in discussions about education, social justice, and national development, echoing Nketia’s call for a recommitment to Nkrumah’s vision. As the festivities continued, the legacy of Dr Nkrumah loomed large, influencing the discourse among political leaders and activists alike. Events like NkrumahFest are essential in reinforcing the historical significance of Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana. His vision for a united and educated Ghana remains a guiding principle for many, including Nketia, who has positioned himself as a staunch advocate for these ideals. The sentiments expressed by Nketia at NkrumahFest are indicative of a broader movement among Ghanaians to reevaluate their history and its implications for the future. His journey from the streets of Seikwa to the helm of the NDC serves as a narrative intertwined with Nkrumah’s legacy of empowerment through education. As the event concluded, the atmosphere in Nkroful felt charged with purpose. Nketia’s unwavering commitment to Nkrumah’s vision reinforces the idea that the past is not merely a series of events but a living, breathing source of inspiration for current and future leaders. The influence of Dr Kwame Nkrumah continues to shape the political landscape of Ghana, and figures like Johnson Asiedu Nketia are ensuring that his legacy endures.
